Day 1: Kigali
This city became the capital of Rwanda in 1962 after they gained their independence. Kigali prides itself as the cleanest city in the whole of Africa. It sprawls across numerous hills, ridges and valleys, and has a vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene. The name Kigali was derived from Mt. Kigali and means ‘Broad.’ It was named in 1907 by Dr. Richard Kandt who was the first colonial resident governor of Rwanda. The city is a host to popular attractions such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Inema Arts Centre, the Presidential Palace and Juru Park.
You will be picked on your arrival terminal from the Kigali International Airport by one of our representatives. You will then be escorted to your vehicle. This will follow with a visit to Kigali Genocide Memorial to pay your respects. Afterwards you will be transferred to your luxurious hotel at the city centre for overnight. (Bed & Breakfast)
Day 2: Kigali – Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park covers a total of 160 km2 of rainforest and encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains, namely Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo. It was named after the chain of dormant volcanoes making up the Virunga Massif as named. The park is home to the endangered mountain gorilla and 178 recorded bird species, with at least 13 species and 16 subspecies endemic to the Virunga and Rwenzori Mountains.
After breakfast, you will be briefed in detail before your departure to Volcanoes National Park. The drive from Kigali to the park is very scenic. From this journeys is where you will realize the reason Rwanda is ‘the land of a thousand hills’. On your arrival to the park, you will be transferred to your lodge for lunch. You will then depart for a nature walk and enjoy the panoramic landscapes of the diverse flora and fauna. You will then return to your lodge for leisure, dinner and overnight. (Fullboard)
Day 3: Volcanoes National Park
On this day you will visit the park’s headquarters after breakfast with your packed lunch for a detailed briefing on the mountain gorilla trekking experience. You will then depart the office accompanied by the expert local guides and spend the rest of the day immersed in adventure. Enjoy the ambience and the exciting birdwatching experience as you track the gorillas and learn the most out of the experience. Some of the notable bird species are baglafecht weaver, bateleur, blue-spotted wood dove and cinnamon-chested bee-eater and the red-backed shrike. It could take you as little as half an hour up to 8 hours to track the gorilla families. You will later return to your lodge for dinner and overnight. (Fullboard)
Day 4: Volcanoes National Park – Kigali
After breakfast, you will depart your lodge for a drive to Kigali. Arrive in time for lunch at a renowned city restaurant. After the successful completion of your safari you will be dropped off at the airport for your onward scheduled flight.
