Brief History & Geography

The word Tanzania was born after the unity of two states Tanganyika and Zanzibar. The combination of the first three letters of each state “Tan” and “Zan” together with the suffix “ia” formed the country’s name. The spoken languages are Swahili, English and other more than 100 languages which makes it the most linguistically diverse country in East Africa. The most dominant religion in Tanzania is Christianity followed by Islam. Tanzania’s economy is heavily based on agriculture which accounts for the highest percentage on the GDP.

Tanzania is located on the eastern coast of Africa with Uganda to the north, Kenya to the North east, Mozambique and Malawi to the south, Rwanda, Burundi and DR Congo to the west. The climate tends to be tropical, with the coastal areas being mostly hot and humid throughout the year. The northwestern region is mainly cool and temperate. There are the short rains running from October to December while the long rains run from March to June.
