Zanzibar

Exotic beaches, great marine life and the spices.

Welcome to Zanzibar which is popularly known as the Spice Island, but also for its astounding clear blue beaches, powdery white sands shaded by tall palm trees and fabulous marine life. Zanzibar and its surrounding islands are ranked highly for their marine life. It is also the home of the endemic Zanzibar Red Colobus, the endemic subspecies of the Blue Monkey and the tree Hyrax and the elusive Zanzibar Leopard. The most important forest is Jozani Forest, a small reminder of how Unguja’s forests once where. The word “Zanzibar” probably derives from the Persian Zangi-bar, “coast of the blacks”; it is known as Zanji-bar in Arabic.

Safaris in Zanzibar

Zanzibar offers some excellent activities like snorkeling, world-class diving – which is centered around Mnemba Atoll to the north-west and the Menai Bay Conservation Area, to the island’s south-west. But even if you’re not a water enthusiast, the chance to view the coastline from a traditional wooden dhow is not to be missed; It’s a worthwhile experience. Many travelers are attracted by the island’s rich culture even though the beach holidays are considered the ultimate appeal – and for them Stone Town is usually seen as a big attraction. A labyrinth of narrow alleys complete with palaces, mosques and tiny shops. Stone Town is noisy, busy and not very clean, but it has a vibrant, exotic atmosphere that could be very enticing. Spend a night or two at one of the beautiful converted merchant’s houses, and look forward to eating out – perhaps at the end of your trip with Evergreen, before your flight home.
