TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
Tarangire National Park is one of the most famous parks in Tanzania. The park is located about 135km southwest of Arusha in the Manyara region. The park covers an approximated total area of 2,850km2 and was established in the year 1970. The name of the park originates from the Tarangire River that crosses the park. The Tarangire River is the primary source of fresh water for wild animals in the Tarangire Ecosystem during the annual dry season. The Tarangire Ecosystem is defined by the long-distance migration of wildebeest and zebras. During the dry season thousands of animals concentrate in Tarangire National Park from the surrounding wet-season dispersal and calving areas. The park has the second highest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania after Serengeti. If you decide to visit Tarangire at all, then we recommend spending a few days in the southern region of the park, which gets few visitors and retains a real air of wilderness.
Best time to visit
During the dry season which runs from June all the way to late October and features exceptional game viewing experience. It’s not recommended to visit the park during the wet season since the animals tend to migrate off the park.
Highlights
- Abundant wildlife which includes large herds of thousands of zebra, wildebeest and cape buffalo. Other common resident animals include waterbuck, giraffe, dik dik, impala, eland, Grant’s gazelle, vervet monkey, banded mongoose, and olive baboon. Predators in Tarangire include lion, leopard, cheetah, caracal, honey badger, and African wild dog.
- The park is also rich in birdlife.
- The other major attraction in Tarangire is the great stands of baobab trees that dot its grassy savannahs. Baobab trees can grow up to 30m and live up to a millennium. This accounts for their rarity.
- The permanent Tarangire river and the beautiful landscapes also add on to the flavor.
