MT KENYA NATIONAL PARK

Mt. Kenya lies about 140 km North, North-East of Nairobi with its Northern flanks across the Equator and covers an area of 715km2. The mountain has two main peaks – Batian (5200m) and Nelion (5188m). The mountains slopes are cloaked in Mount Kenya seen through foliage and a cloudy skyforest, bamboo, scrub and moorland giving way on the high central peaks to rock, ice and snow. Mt. Kenya is an important water catchment area, supplying the Tana and Northern Ewaso Nyiro systems. The flora and fauna of Mount Kenya are diverse, due to the variation in altitude, rainfall, aspect and temperature. The mountain is an imposing extinct volcano dominating the landscape of the Kenyan Highlands, East of the Rift. The park was in 1997 recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site and is also a Biodiverse reserve.

Best time to visit

December to March are considered the best times to visit since they are the sunniest months. From March to May cloudy periods and rain are experienced and it drizzles from October to early December which may limit clear views. However, Mount Kenya National Park is open for the explorers all year round.
