BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK

This diverse park covers a total approximated area of 331km2. Elevations around the park range between 1,190 to 2,607 meters above sea level. The park was established in the year 1991 after the Impenetrable Central Forest Reserve, Mgahinga Gorilla Reserve and Rwenzori Mountains Reserve, were given the national park status and renamed the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP). The park is located southwest of Uganda bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo. BINP has also been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1994. The park is a sanctuary for colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, and many birds such as hornbills and turacos. It provides habitat for over 120 species of mammals, 348 species of birds, 220 species of butterflies, 27 species of frogs, chameleons, geckos, and many endangered species. Floristically, the park is among the most diverse forests in East Africa, with more than 1,000 flowering plant species, which includes 163 species of trees and 104 species of ferns. It is owned and managed as a protected area by the Uganda Wildlife Authority which is a parastatal government body.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit this park is when the climate is fairly dry because the terrains are easily passable during this period. This is June to August and December to February. Although, the park is open all year round for wildlife viewing and gorilla treks.
