TSAVO NATIONAL PARKS

TSAVO NATIONAL PARKS

Tsavo East National Park

This is the largest national park in Kenya covering about 13,747km2. The park is divided into two by the Mombasa – Nairobi highway, to Tsavo East and Tsavo west National Parks. Most of the park consists of semi-arid grasslands and savanna. It is considered one of the world’s biodiversity strongholds, and its popularity is mostly due to the vast amounts of diverse wildlife and birdlife. It is situated in a semi-arid area previously known as the Taru Desert and it opened in April 1948; it is located near the town of Voi. When considering a Tsavo East safari, it’s worth knowing that nearly all safaris take place in the south of the park. The enormous northern region of Tsavo East was closed to the public for many years and, although it is now open again, distances are vast and there is virtually no infrastructure. In practice, it’s mostly an area for adventurous explorers.

Tsavo West National Park

The park is located in the Coast Province of Kenya and covers a total area of 9,065km2 on an elevation of 419-1,677m above sea level. Together with adjoining ranches and protected areas, they comprise the Tsavo Conservation Area. Tsavo West is a more popular destination compared to Tsavo East on account of its magnificent scenery. To the south of Tsavo West, the Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary directly borders the well-known Taita Hills Game Sanctuary, is one of Kenya’s most successful new community conservation initiatives. If you’re interested in Lumo safaris, you’ll find there’s just one spectacular lodge on the conservancy.

Best time to visit

Tsavo National Parks are best visited in the dry months which range between June to October and January to February. Although the park can be visited any time of year.

However, the months of April, May & November are not recommended as the conditions are more adverse & challenging.
